Is Unity Possible?

Follows the message Jesus Prays for Unity from the Attributes of God series

It can feel like every headline forces you to pick a side. Is real unity still possible? Yes, but the world can't produce it. Every party and movement unites some people by shutting others out. True unity comes through the cross, it doesn't require everyone to be the same, and the Holy Spirit makes it possible in the church today.

Key takeaways

  • Yes, real unity is possible, but it comes through the cross and the Holy Spirit, not through any party or movement.
  • Division starts in the human heart, and social media algorithms that reward conflict make it worse.
  • Unity is choosing to stay joined together across real differences; it is not sameness or conformity.
  • Believers are held together by two things: they bear the same Creator's image, and they share one purpose in Christ.

Why does everything feel so divided?

Division starts in the human heart. Pastor Adrian Cruz put it plainly on Beyond Sunday: division is the product of our sin nature, a rebellious and divided heart. We tend to sort people into sides, and plenty of forces are happy to help.

Social media is one of them. Platforms have acknowledged that their algorithms reward conflict, because more controversial content gets promoted more. Pastor Landon Sloan pointed out that his generation grew up with social media, nonstop politics, and tragic news. Now the automatic response to almost anything is to pick a side. A tragedy happens, and the first question is who was right and who was wrong.

That matters for the church. People are looking for any reason not to trust the church. If believers can't be united within their own walls, why would the world believe the message they share?

Why can't the world deliver real unity?

Because the world's unity is always conditional. People are designed for unity, so they keep looking for it in a political figure, a movement, or a party. A weekend message at Calvary described all of those as, at best, temporary and, at worst, evil.

The reason is built in. Every group that gathers people around a cause also separates them: you can join us if you believe these things and follow these principles. By definition, it includes some by excluding others.

The cross works differently. It is open to anyone who believes.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

As Pastor Adrian said, the cross is the only great unifier.

Does unity mean everyone has to be the same?

No. Unity is choosing to stay joined together across real differences. Conformity is the world's counterfeit: look like us, sound like us, talk like us.

Calvary is a church of more than 70 nations. If unity meant everyone being alike, all that beauty would be lost: the cultures, the languages, the color. The weekend message made the point with a marriage. The preacher said he's glad his spouse isn't like him, and Pastor Landon, his son, agreed that one of him is plenty.

Pastor Adrian takes it further: for unity to exist, there have to be differences. If everyone thought and talked the same, there would be nothing to be united across. Unity takes intention. You choose to set your opinions and differences aside and love someone, not for who they are, but for whose image they bear.

The deepest picture of this is God Himself. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct persons with different roles, yet one in nature. Unity is who God is. And Jesus prayed for His followers to share it.

My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

John 17:20 to 21

What actually unites believers?

Two things unite believers, even when they disagree on smaller issues: a shared image and a shared purpose. Pastor Landon named both.

  • Your image. You come from the same Creator as every other person, and you reflect His image.
  • Your purpose. Believers share one mission, even with different gifts and roles. Not everyone should lead worship, and that's a good thing.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:12

Different functions serve one purpose. When you center yourself on the cross, the other disagreements shrink by comparison.

Is unity actually possible today?

Yes. Both pastors believe this kind of unity can be reached through the power of the Holy Spirit. They see it already at Calvary, where people from dozens of nations worship one God with one purpose. That doesn't happen by accident. It's the work of the Spirit.

How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!

Psalm 133:1

The church's unity is its witness. In a divided culture, believers who love each other across political lines, opinions, and cultures are a miracle the world can see. So stop fighting to be right or to win the argument. Ask what it would look like this week to extend the peace and love that come from Jesus.

Five ways to practice unity this week

  1. Put your phone down for a while. Notice how much of your feed is built to divide.
  2. Before reacting to the news, pray for the people involved instead of picking a side.
  3. Have a real conversation with someone at church whose background is different from yours.
  4. When you disagree with someone, remind yourself whose image they bear.
  5. Choose peace over winning an argument at least once.

Pray

Jesus, You prayed that we would be one. Forgive me for the ways I've chosen sides over people. Help me see Your image in everyone I meet, and make me a peacemaker in a divided world. Amen.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about unity?

In John 17, Jesus prays that all who believe in Him would be one, just as He and the Father are one, so the world would believe. Psalm 133 says it is good and pleasant when God's people live together in unity.

Does Christian unity mean we have to agree on everything?

No. Unity is not sameness. Believers can differ on many things and still be united by the cross, by being made in God's image, and by sharing the mission of Jesus.

Why are people so divided today?

Division starts with the sin nature, which divides the heart. Media and algorithms that reward conflict make it worse. True unity comes through Jesus, not through any party or movement.

How can the church show unity to the world?

By loving one another across political lines, opinions, and cultures. The church's unity is its witness, and that kind of love points people to Jesus.

Your next step

Unity grows in real relationships. Find a group where you can get to know people across our church family, or plan a visit and experience a church of many nations worshiping together.
