Who Needs the Holy Spirit?

Follows the message Jesus and the Spirit

You may know the Holy Spirit as the Counselor or the Advocate, and still wonder why your faith feels stuck. Every believer needs the Holy Spirit, and His power is already available to you. What usually holds people back is not a lack of power but resistance. That means convenience, complacency, and the habit of saying no when He asks for a step of faith.

Key takeaways

  • Every follower of Jesus needs the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, who gives believers power to be Christ's witnesses.
  • Most Christians who don't experience the Spirit's power are held back by convenience, complacency, and religious comfort.
  • To quench the Spirit is to resist Him until His work in you slows down, the way water puts out a fire.
  • You hear God's voice more clearly by obeying what He has already said and taking the step of faith He asks for.

Who needs the Holy Spirit?

Every follower of Jesus does. The Holy Spirit is for every believer. He lives in you, gives you power to be Christ's witness, and changes you from the inside.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Acts 1:8

The Holy Spirit is a person, the third person of the Trinity, who is with you and within you. Jesus promised Him to His followers as "another advocate to help you and be with you forever" (John 14:16). Because the Spirit is a person, you don't use Him like a tool. You receive Him, listen to Him, and respond.

If the Spirit is available, why don't more Christians experience His power?

Most Christians miss the Spirit's power because their faith never gets put into action. Most people who hold back do love God. The weekend's guest speaker was Pastor Shannon O'Dell of Brand New Church. On Beyond Sunday, he told Pastor Sean Sloan that the basic barrier is that there isn't an increase in active, personal faith. Everything you need is already there.

What's missing is the willingness to push past three things:

  • Convenience. Doing only what fits easily into your week.
  • Complacency. Settling for where you are because it feels fine.
  • Religious comfort. Assuming God must be pleased because you checked the box.

Convenience may be the biggest trap of all for Christians. Bible studies and midweek prayer are good things. But they can turn into routine that never leads to change.

What does it mean to quench the Spirit?

Quenching the Spirit is resisting Him until His work in you slows down, the way water puts out a fire.

Do not quench the Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:19

Pastor Sean used a picture from physics to explain it. A force changes the speed or direction of something. In a vacuum, with no resistance, a moving object keeps going. The only reason it slows or stops is resistance. The Holy Spirit is the presence that produces power in you, and the thing that slows that power down is your resistance.

That is why change begins with a decision. Romans 12 describes a transformation that starts in the mind.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

Can the Holy Spirit help you overcome what feels permanent?

Yes. Many believers live as if a struggle can never change. "This is just how I am." "It's generational." Pastor Shannon pushed back hard on that. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in every believer.

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Romans 8:11

Change may be slow and hard, but you don't have to give the enemy victory by agreeing that nothing can change. When other people see that victory in your life, it becomes part of your testimony.

What does a step of faith look like?

A step of faith is doing the specific thing you sense God asking, instead of putting it back in your pocket.

For example, Pastor Shannon told about a 41-year-old man in his church who had been unable to hear for 14 years. After a men's night, he came to the altar during worship to give God a full yes. He sensed the Spirit tell him to take out his hearing aids and hand them to his wife. He did, and he told the pastor that he could hear as an adult for the first time. The guest was careful to say the story is not only about physical healing. It's about the step. Many of us take what God asks us to hand over and slip it back in our pocket.

The guest had his own step to take. After preaching in Pakistan, where many people responded to the gospel, he asked where the new believers would go to church. There were very few churches for them, and he sensed the Spirit say to start one. His first thought was that a bigger church should do it. He said yes anyway, and a new congregation began within weeks.

Your step may be much smaller. It might be sharing your faith with a coworker, praying with your spouse, leading your kids, or joining a group. You don't need special training before you start. Jesus said you will be His witnesses. Once you share your faith a couple of times and hear yourself say things you didn't plan, it becomes contagious.

How do you hear God's voice more clearly?

Obey what He has already said. Pastor Sean put it this way: every time God speaks and you say no, His voice gets quieter to you.

Marriage works the same way. When your spouse brings something to you and you don't receive it, they bring less and less. When you receive it, the relationship grows. Jesus tied love and obedience together.

If you love me, keep my commands.

John 14:15

The Spirit who speaks is also the Spirit who gives power to do what He asks. Saying yes is how you learn to recognize His voice.

Four questions for your next step of faith

  1. Where is convenience or complacency slowing me down spiritually right now?
  2. Is there something I've told myself can never change? What would it look like to ask God for victory there?
  3. What has God already asked me to do that I've put back in my pocket?
  4. Who is one person I can share my faith with or pray with this week?

Pray

Holy Spirit, I don't want to resist You. Forgive me for choosing comfort over obedience. Fill me with Your power, give me words when I share my faith, and help me say yes the first time You speak. Amen.

Common questions

Why do Christians need the Holy Spirit?

Jesus promised that His followers would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them (Acts 1:8). The Spirit lives in believers, gives words to share the gospel, transforms our minds, and gives the strength to obey God.

What does it mean to quench the Spirit?

To quench is to put out a fire. You quench the Spirit when you resist Him through complacency, comfort, or ignoring what He asks you to do.

How can I hear God's voice more clearly?

Obey what He has already said. When you keep saying no, His voice seems to grow quieter to you. When you say yes, you learn to recognize it more.

Do I need training before I can share my faith?

Training can help, but Jesus did not make it a requirement. In Acts 1:8 He said His followers will be His witnesses when the Holy Spirit comes on them. The Spirit gives the words when you step out.
