Grandparenting Through This World: A 7-Day Faith Playbook for Grandparents

Black and white photo of a grandfather holding his grandson's hand as they walk together down a busy church hallway

This playbook is for grandparents of kids ages 3 to 11. It walks you through seven days, with one Bible truth each day, a verse to read, a simple "grandparent move" to try, and a prayer. Most of it fits into time you already spend together: a car ride, a walk, dinner, or bedtime. At the end there is a checklist and a small celebration to share with your grandchild.

Seven days. Seven simple truths. A whole lot of hugs, giggles, and God-moments along the way.

Our calling

Grandparents have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to help children know God, recognize His voice, understand His Word, and live with courage in a changing world.

We also get the privilege of supporting and strengthening their parents: honoring their role, reinforcing the biblical values they are teaching, praying for them, and coming alongside them as they lead and disciple their children.

When we cheer on Mom and Dad, our grandchildren see a united team that loves them and loves Jesus, and that is one of the greatest gifts we can give.

Our role is not to replace their parents, but to be a trusted source of wisdom, encouragement, prayer, and godly support as together we help shape the next generation.

We can't control everything our grandchildren will encounter, but we can help give them a biblical foundation they can carry with them wherever they go.

"We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done."

Psalm 78:4

From calling to everyday faith

Grandparenting with purpose doesn't have to be complicated! Some of the sweetest spiritual moments happen in ordinary places: around the dinner table, riding in the car, playing a game, taking a walk or chatting before bedtime.

This seven-day playbook helps you turn those everyday moments into chances to share God's truth, grow your grandchild's faith, and build a spiritual legacy, all while supporting the foundation their parents are building at home.

You don't need to preach a sermon or have all the answers. Just show up, open God's Word, share what He has taught you, listen well, and pray.

Each day, focus on one simple biblical truth:

Read it. Talk about it. Live it. Pray it.

Ready? Let's start with the foundation for everything else!

Day 1: Make sure they know who God is

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."

Deuteronomy 6:5

The truth

Before our grandchildren understand everything happening in the world, they need to understand who God is:

  • God loves them.
  • God created them.
  • God sees them.
  • God is good.
  • God can be trusted.

Our first job isn't to make them afraid of the world. It's to help them become confident in their God!

Grandparent move

Tell your grandchild one thing you love about God. Keep it simple: "Grandma loves God because He has always been faithful to me."

Then ask: What do you love about God? (Little ones may need a helping hand to answer.)

Pray

Father, help my grandchildren know You personally. May they love You with all their hearts and learn from an early age that You are good and trustworthy. Amen.

Day 2: Teach them who they are

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Psalm 139:14

The truth

Our grandchildren will hear lots of messages about who they should be. Grandparents can be the steady voice that keeps reminding them:

  • God made you.
  • God loves you.
  • God has a purpose for you.
  • You don't have to become someone else to have value.

Their identity begins with their Creator.

Grandparent move

Look your grandchild in the eyes and tell them: "God made you on purpose, and there is nobody else exactly like you!"

Then name one God-given quality you see in them:

  • "You are compassionate."
  • "You are creative."
  • "You are courageous."
  • "You notice people who need help."

Ask: What is something special God put inside you?

Pray

Lord, protect my grandchildren from believing lies about who they are. Help them see themselves through Your eyes and grow confident in the person You created them to be. Amen.

Day 3: Help them love God's Word

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

Psalm 119:105

The truth

Our grandchildren will hear plenty of opinions. Teach them that God's Word is different from an opinion: the Bible helps us know what is true and shows us how God wants us to live.

And here's the secret: don't just tell them to read the Bible. Let them catch you reading it!

Grandparent move

Cuddle up and read one short Bible story together.

  • Ages 3 to 6: Grab a colorful children's Bible.
  • Ages 7 to 11: Let them read a few verses aloud.

Then play detective with three questions:

  1. What happened?
  2. What does this teach us about God?
  3. What can we do because of what we learned?

Pray

God, give my grandchildren a love for Your Word. When the world becomes confusing, remind them to return to what You have said. Amen.

Day 4: Teach them how to recognize truth

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

John 8:32

The truth

Kids today hear messages from friends, school, shows, games, social media, and culture. We can't prepare them for every single message, but we can teach them how to test what they hear.

Teach them the Truth Detective Questions:

  • Is it true?
  • Is it kind?
  • Does it agree with God's Word?
  • Would this please Jesus?

We don't have to make children afraid of culture. We can teach them biblical discernment!

Grandparent move: Play "What Does God Say?"

Turn discernment into a game. Read a situation out loud and let them decide:

  • Someone tells you that you have to be mean to fit in.
  • A friend asks you to hide something from your parents.
  • Someone tells you that nobody loves you.

After each one, ask: What does God say? Bonus points for finding a Bible verse together!

Pray

Jesus, give my grandchildren wisdom. Help them recognize what is true and what is false. Give them courage to choose Your truth even when others choose differently. Amen.

Day 5: Teach them to talk to God

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

Philippians 4:6

The truth

One of the greatest gifts we can give our grandchildren is this: you can always talk to God!

  • When they're scared, pray.
  • When they're excited, pray.
  • When they make a mistake, pray.
  • When they need help, pray.
  • When something wonderful happens, thank God!

Prayer should become their first response, not their last resort.

Grandparent move

Ask: "Is there anything you want Grandma or Grandpa to pray about today?" Then pray about it right away, short and simple enough for them to understand.

Challenge: Invite your grandchild to pray just one sentence too:

  • "Jesus, thank You for..."
  • "Jesus, please help me..."

Pray

Father, teach my grandchildren to run to You. May prayer become natural to them, and may they know that You hear them when they pray. Amen.

Day 6: Show them how to love people

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Matthew 5:16

The truth

Following Jesus isn't only about what we believe; it changes how we treat people! Teach your grandchildren to be on the lookout for:

  • The lonely child
  • The new student
  • The person who needs help
  • The child others leave out
  • The neighbor who needs encouragement

We're raising kids who don't just ask, "What do I want?" We want them to learn to ask, "Jesus, who can I help?"

Grandparent move: Go on a kindness mission!

Do one good work together. You might:

  • Write an encouraging note
  • Take food to someone
  • Help a neighbor
  • Donate toys
  • Call someone who is lonely
  • Pray for another family

Ask: "Who do you think Jesus wants us to encourage today?"

Pray

Jesus, give my grandchildren compassionate hearts. Help them notice people others overlook and teach them to use their lives to show Your love. Amen.

Day 7: Remind them that God goes with them

"Be strong and courageous...for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Joshua 1:9

The truth

We won't always be standing beside our grandchildren. One day they'll walk into classrooms, friendships, situations, and seasons where Grandma and Grandpa can't go.

But God can!

Our goal isn't to make our grandchildren depend on us. It's to point them toward the God who will always be with them.

Grandparent move: Speak a blessing

Gently place your hand on your grandchild's shoulder or head and speak this blessing over them:

"May you always know that God loves you. May you recognize His voice, love His Word, choose what is right, love people well, and remember that wherever you go, God goes with you."

Ask: "When you're somewhere Grandma or Grandpa isn't, who is always with you?" God!

Pray

Father, I entrust my grandchildren to You. Protect them, guide them, speak to them, and use their lives for Your purposes. Give them courage to follow Jesus in every generation and every circumstance. Amen.

Grandparent's 7-day checklist

Check off each day as you go, and celebrate every box!

  • Day 1, Know God: Tell them something you love about God.
  • Day 2, Know Who You Are: Speak God-given identity over them.
  • Day 3, Know the Word: Read Scripture together.
  • Day 4, Know the Truth: Practice biblical discernment.
  • Day 5, Know How to Pray: Pray together about something specific.
  • Day 6, Love People: Do one good work together.
  • Day 7, Live Courageously: Speak a biblical blessing over them.

One thing to remember

You don't have to have all the answers to be a godly grandparent. Just keep doing these six things:

  • Tell your stories
  • Open your Bible
  • Ask good questions
  • Pray with them
  • Model what you believe
  • Keep pointing them to Jesus

Your grandchildren may someday forget what you bought them, where you took them, or what activities you planned. But may they always remember: "Grandma and Grandpa loved Jesus, and they taught me how to love Him too."

A grandparent's prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of my grandchildren. Give me wisdom to help them navigate a world that is constantly changing while anchoring them in a God who never changes. Let my words carry truth, my actions demonstrate Your love, and my life give them an example worth following. May the faith You have built in me become a testimony that strengthens the next generation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

"But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children."

Psalm 103:17

Celebrate together

Seven days, seven truths, and a whole lot of God-moments: that's worth a party! Plan a special time with your grandchild to celebrate everything you learned together.

  • Throw a mini faith party. Make a special treat together, like cupcakes, cookies, or ice cream sundaes. Decorate with balloons or streamers in seven different colors, one for each day. Turn on their favorite worship songs and have a dance party.
  • Play "What Do You Remember?" Take turns sharing one thing you remember from each day, and give a sticker, high-five, or small prize for every answer: Who is God? Who made you special? What lights our path? What are the Truth Detective Questions? When can we talk to God? Who did we help? Who goes with you everywhere?
  • Award a certificate. Present your grandchild with a handmade "Faith Champion" certificate. Sign it together and let them hang it on the fridge or in their room as a reminder of what they learned.
  • Make a memory. Snap a photo together, draw a picture of your favorite day, or write down your grandchild's favorite moment to tuck inside your Bible. Send a copy to Mom and Dad so they can celebrate too!
  • End with a thank-you prayer. Hold hands and take turns thanking God for one thing from this week.

Thank-you prayer

Jesus, thank You for this special week together. Thank You for loving us, making us, teaching us, hearing us, and going with us everywhere. Help us keep following You every single day. Amen!

Psst... don't stop here! Pick your favorite day and do it again next week. Faith grows one ordinary moment at a time.

Key terms

  • Identity is who God says your grandchild is. It begins with their Creator, who made them on purpose.
  • Discernment is the skill of recognizing what is true by asking, "What does God say?"

Common questions

How can grandparents share faith with grandchildren?

Use the time you already spend together. Around the dinner table, in the car, on a walk, or before bed, read a short Bible passage, talk about it, try it out, and pray. You don't need to preach a sermon or know every answer. Tell your own stories of God's faithfulness, ask good questions, and let your grandchildren see you reading the Bible yourself.

What ages is this grandparenting playbook for?

It was written for grandchildren ages 3 to 11. Some activities have options by age. On Day 3, for example, kids 3 to 6 hear a story from a colorful children's Bible, and kids 7 to 11 read a few verses aloud.

How can grandparents support parents in teaching faith?

Honor the parents' role and back up the biblical values they are already teaching at home. Pray for them and help where they need it. Grandparents don't replace Mom and Dad. When kids see their parents and grandparents working as one team, they see a family that loves them and loves Jesus.

What Bible verses can I read with my grandchildren?

The seven days use Deuteronomy 6:5, Psalm 139:14, Psalm 119:105, John 8:32, Philippians 4:6, Matthew 5:16, and Joshua 1:9. The playbook also points to Psalm 78:4 and Psalm 103:17, which are both about passing faith to the next generation.

How do I teach my grandchild to pray?

Ask what they would like you to pray about, then pray about it right away in short, simple words. After that, invite them to pray one sentence of their own, such as "Jesus, thank You for..." or "Jesus, please help me..."
